Buses stop running earlier than you might expect, often around 5:00 or 6:00 PM. Check the last departure time from your specific stop so you aren't left stranded.
The first bus of the morning is the best for beating the heat and the crowds. Late afternoon on the Bay route offers spectacular sunset colors.
Pre-booking is smart, especially if coming off a cruise ship, as the on-site kiosks get swamped quickly.
Note that while state museums are free on the first Sunday of the month, the bus ticket prices remain the same.
